So about 2/3 weeks ago, my team leader Lauren gifted my team with a book called “God has a name” by John Mark Comer. Since reading this book, my relationship with Yahweh has changed in the best ways possible. Throughout this book, the different characteristics of God are discussed. Many times the ancient Hebrew words are brought up for more context on certain things God does or says. And the reason I’m saying all of this is to ask, what do you call God by? Do you call Him by His name, Yahweh, or by His title, the Lord/God?
Take a moment to open your Bible and read Exodus 3:14-15 and look up what the direct translation of “I Am Who I Am” is in ancient Hebrew. If you don’t want to, it’s ehyeh-asher-ehyeh, which can translate to “whatever I am, I will be”. Which is sort of confusing, how do you get Yahweh out of that? So, in ancient Hebrew there were no vowels when writing. Also confusing, but super cool. Which means in the Hebrew Bible, the vowels aren’t in the original text, it just says “Y-H-W-H”. YHWH shares the same root word as I Am Who I Am, only ehyeh mean “I am” and Yahweh means “He is”, meaning that when we refer to God, we say Yahweh.
All of this to say, Yahweh wants a personal and intimate relationship with us, but if we can’t see or talk to Him beyond His title (Lord/God), how can we truly have that relationship with Him? When we talk to a friend, we call them by their name, we don’t say “friend”. Because we have a relationship with them, it’s pretty much expected that we call them by their name. Please don’t get me wrong on this, I’m not saying that calling Yahweh by God or Lord is wrong, I just want you to explore your relationship with Yahweh and see what you discover. So I challenge you to spend some time in His presence and see what He reveals to you.
Thank you so much for your time is you decided to read this whole spill. Feel free to comment or contact me personally if you need any clarification on anything I said or if you have any questions! Love you all so so much!!!
Gracie, thank you for sharing that enlightening post. I remember that YHWH stood for Yaweh, but I did not remember that the meaning is “I am who I am.” Many times I have wondered why our Creator was referred to as Lord and God, since as you pointed out, these are titular and not personal. Even the Greek gods have names. Great blog! Keep them coming!
Hugs,
Lynne
